Fresh fruit, vegetables, and granola bars are not the only healthy snacks.  Try some of the following snack ideas for a variety throughout the week.

    ~ Canned Peaches w/Cottage Cheese

     ~Baked Tortilla Chips w/Salsa

    ~"Ants on a Log" (peanut butter spread on celery ribs w/raisins)

   ~ Yogurt Parfait

    ~Cheese and Whole Grain Crackers

    ~Mini Pizza Pie (spread pizza sauce on 6" whole grain pitas, top with cheese and your favorite veggies, bake)

    ~Yogurt and Graham Crackers

    ~Peanut Butter and Bananas on Whole Wheat Bread

    ~Frozen 100% Fruit Juice Popsicles

    ~Rolled Ham or Turkey & Cheese Tortillas (ham or turkey and cheese rolled up in a flour tortilla)

    ~Whole Grain Waffle Topped with Low-Fat Vanilla Yogurt and Frozen Berries

   ~ Reduced Sugar Cereal w/Low-Fat or Fat Free Milk

*Offer a variety of dark green and orange fruits and vegetables for vitamins, whole grains for fiber, and low-fat dairy for calcium during snack time.

 

Yogurt Parfait

3/4 cup whole grain or reduced sugar cereal
4 oz. low-fat vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup frozen berries

Layer cereal, yogurt, fruit 2 times in a 12 oz. cup or a bowl.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.

*Experiment with different cereals and fruit combinations.

Ham or Turkey & Cheese Pinwheel

4 (8 or 12 inch) flour tortillas
1 (8 oz.) lite or fat free cream cheese, softened
2 green onions, minced
1/2 lb. thinly sliced deli ham and/or turkey
1 medium cucumber, thinly sliced (optional)

In a small bowl combine cream cheese and green onion.  Spread cream cheese mixture evenly over tortillas.  Layer sliced deli ham and/or turkey and cucumber slices on top of cream cheese mixture.  Carefully roll the tortillas as tight as possible. 

Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.  Cut rolls into 1 inch slices and arrange on platter.  Makes about 3 dozen.

Trail Mix

 2 cups mini pretzels
  1 cup M & M's
  2 cups whole grain cereal (use 2 different kinds)
  1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  2 cups dried fruit ( use 2 different kinds)  Example: Raisins, cranberries, blueberries, cherries
*2 cups peanuts or slivered almonds (optional)

Combine all ingredients and store in an air tight container.  Makes about 16 half cup servings.

*Check for allergies before including nuts.

Strawberry Yogurt Dip

2 Tbsp. Kool-Aid strawberry flavor sugar sweetened soft drink
1 cup vanilla low-fat yogurt

Stir together and chill for 2 hours.  Serve with fresh fruit.

Fresh Fruit & Cheese Kabobs

8 bamboo skewers (9 inch)
1 small bunch red or green grapes
1 cup melon chunks, 1 inch
1 pint strawberries, cut in half
4-6 oz. Cheddar, American, Monterey Jack, or Swiss cheese, cut in 1/2 inch cubes

Alternate fruit and cheese on the skewer with a grape at each end.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.

*Try different fresh fruits in season.
*Check for allergies.  Some students are allergic to fresh pineapple.
