100-Book Challenge:

This is an independent reading program designed to develop a love of reading and lifelong readers. The program is founded on the belief that students who read on a regular basis with accuracy, stamina and engagement are more successful. Students should be reading for 15-30 (1-2 steps) minutes per night. 1 step of reading equals 15 minutes, 2 steps equals 30 minutes. After children complete their independent reading at home, they should log their steps in their reading log in their 100-Book Challenge folder. Please sign or initial your child's reading steps to ensure you are monitoring their reading progress every night

Everyday Mathematics:

Second grade focuses on procedures, concepts, and applications in four critical areas:

· understanding of base-10 notation;

· building fluency with addition and subtraction;

· using standard units of measure; and

· describing and analyzing shapes

These practices will gradually shape children’s way of thinking about mathematics and will promote the development of their mathematical perceptions and understandings. Math homework will be assigned daily. At the beginning of a new unit, a Parent Letter will be sent home to help inform you of the focus and concepts that will be covered throughout the unit. It will also give you some helpful tips to help you assist your child with their homework.

Daily Homework:

Students will write their homework in their planners everyday. Please make sure to check your child's planner to ensure their homework is completed. Please sign planners every night. The planner is an excellent communication tool between teachers and parents! Please feel free to write me notes in your child's planner. Please remove and review papers that are in the blue folder each night. Keep those in the "Keep Home" side and return those on the "Return to School" side. Students will have homework Monday-Thursday. There will be NO homework given on Fridays!
