Mrs. McGraw

WELCOME!

I am so excited to spend my school year with you all. Fourth grade is such a fun year with so many wonderful learning activities to celebrate. To have a successful year, my most important goal is to create a family of learners in my classroom. I am committed to creating a classroom environment where your child is a valued, trusted, and integral part of our family of learners. To accomplish this, I have planned a variety of activities to emphasize and reinforce this goal. It is my hope that you will support and encourage this vision at home.

·ELA Curriculum:
We will be using The American Reading Company Literature lab and Core Curriculum this year.

*American Reading Company Literature Lab- There are two core texts we will be using, one fiction and one nonfiction, to apply reading standards, as well as reader’s and writer’s workshop.

*When we finish the ARC Literacy Lab, we will be using the American Reading Company Core Research Labs. In this curriculum there are no workbooks or large anthologies. Students will be use a binder to keep their classwork in and refer to during each lab. We will be using a variety of Informational and Literature texts. After the lab, students will be assessed and/or complete a project.

·Spelling

We will be using Rebecca Sitton Spelling. This spelling program may be different than what you are familiar with in the past. We are focusing on helping students for a lifetime of spelling by working on spelling correctly in writing. Students will be provided with a list of words every other Friday and a small skill to review. We will practice spelling the words within sentences and paragraphs, to not only show the students correct spelling, but to also show correct usage. Students will have an entire week to prepare for the test, and multiple opportunities to practice. Your child will receive the list and practice packet on Friday (every other week) and will be assessed the following Friday. I will collect the packets to monitor completion.

100 Book Challenge

Students will be participating in the 100 Book Challenge. This program is designed to allow students 30 minutes in the school day to read on their independent level. Students will also be required to read 1-2 steps each night ( 1 step= 15 min.) I will check each morning to see that 2 steps have been completed the night before. No steps are due over the weekend, but if your child does read, please sign for credit!

*PLEASE SIGN LOGS, AS THIS WILL BE ONE TEST GRADE TOWARDS THE AVERAGE*
