Continuity of Education Plan and School Closure Update

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Last week, Governor Wolf made the decision to close all Pennsylvania schools for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. On Wednesday, April 15, 2020, Pedro Rivera, Secretary of Education, communicated that with the closure for the remainder of the year certain, it was the expectation of the Pennsylvania Department of Education that Districts offer planned instruction at every grade level for all students.
As I previously communicated, our team had already begun the process of revising our plan to strengthen educational opportunities for our students prior to the Secretary’s announcement.
Beginning on Monday, April 27, 2020, the Forest City Regional School District will transition to a more formal phase of our Continuity of Education plan with mandatory work for students. Students are expected to engage in the educational opportunities provided by their teachers. Teachers will provide access to new content and information and will consider each student’s next grade level and/or course in sequence to identify the essential skills or concepts that would be most beneficial. Teachers will also continue to reinforce previously taught skills and provide enrichment opportunities while introducing new learning.
Instruction and engagement during this phase will consist of live face-to-face lessons and activities combined with the work that our teachers have been providing in Google Classroom and through paper packets over the past five weeks.
All teachers will use Google Meet or Zoom to engage students in live instructional sessions within their Google Classrooms. The schedule for these live sessions will be emailed to your student/child. The live sessions will be recorded to ensure that students who are unable to join at the scheduled time have the opportunity to watch the lesson at a later time.
Please remember, this work is now mandatory, and therefore, your student must participate. We would like to partner with you to remove barriers that exist for participation. Please contact Mr. Steve Glynn at 570-785-2432 or at if you need support in utilizing technology for remote learning. Families who are experiencing difficulty in engaging for other reasons should
contact their building principal. We know that these are very difficult times for all of us and we are here to provide guidance and support as needed.
 Changes to be aware of:
1. All students in grades 7-12 must check their email daily. Information regarding live lessons will be emailed to students’ accounts. In addition, students must respond to their teacher’s emails. Instructions for accessing FCRSD email are included with this letter.
2. Parents of students in grades PK-6 should check their child’s email daily. Teachers will use district email as a tool for communication regarding activities and assignments. Instructions for accessing FCRSD email are included with this letter.
3. Student participation will be monitored through participation in live lessons and through submission of assigned work.
4. Grades for the third trimester (elementary) and fourth quarter (high school) will be pass/fail. Students’ grades will be based on their participation and engagement in the live sessions and activities provided by their teachers (PK-12) and in the submission of completed assignments (grades 3-12).
Our team is working to formalize plans for many of the end of year events and activities that need to be addressed prior to the end of the school year. These events include but are not limited to Class of 2020 activities, 6th grade graduation, 7th grade orientation, pre-school and kindergarten registration, extended school year, and high school course selection. We will share updates with you as they become available.
The weekly food and work distributions will continue to be held on Tuesdays at the Forest City Regional Elementary School, the Union Dale Methodist Church, and the Pleasant Mount Social Hall. Beginning on Tuesday, April 28th the distribution time will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
We greatly appreciate the engagement and support of our families, students, faculty, staff, and administration as we continue to navigate this unprecedented situation.
In closing, I just want you to know how much I miss seeing our faculty, staff, and students each day. Like you, I look forward to receiving notification that it is safe for us to be together again. Until then, I hope you and your family stay safe and healthy. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions. I can be reached at 570-785-2403 or at
