Hello! I am Mr. Pryal and I will be your child’s 5th grade ELA teacher. This is my second year at Forest City Elementary and I am excited to get to know each and every one of your children. In my class we will be doing a lot of reading as well as writing. We will also be learning different grammar skills each week. Spelling will be much different than in past years. We are no longer doing traditional spelling tests. Research suggests that there is not much benefit of this in upper grade levels who have already mastered a lot of the phonics and phonemic awareness. We will still be working on spelling daily but it will not be its own grade. If you have any questions about that you can contact Mrs. Dennebaum, supervisor of curriculum at Ldennebaum@fcrsd.org. You can also learn more at our curriculum night on September 26th.
Some things to keep in mind:
- The curriculum we will be using this year is called Expeditionary Learning. In this curriculum there are no workbooks or large anthologies. Students will be provided a binder that they will keep in the classroom which they will keep different papers that I give them daily. Again, if there are any questions about the curriculum you can contact Mrs. Dennebaum at the email listed above.
- All students will start with a homework grade of 100%. Students will lose 1 point from that 100% for each homework assignment that they miss. Their homework grade will be averaged in as a test grade for each trimester.
- All tests will be announced in advance. Once graded, the tests will be sent home to be signed to show that you are aware of your child’s grade.
- I post all homework/tests/announcements using the Remind app. (instructions here remind.com/join/c6fba2)
I believe that there should be an open communication between parents/guardians and teachers so do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at my email, email@example.com. You can also call the school and have them transfer you to my room if you would like to talk on the phone.
I am looking forward to having a great school year and with your help we can ensure that your child gets the best learning experience that he or she can receive.
